As a war correspondent he was stationed in Vietnam, The Middle East, Africa and China, as an eyewitness of such historic events as the Six Days and Yom Kippur Wars, China’s Cultural Revolution and the Islamic Revolution in Iran. In 1979 he became US correspondent in the United States for the Dutch daily Algemeen Dagblad, NOS Dutch and VRT Belgian Radio & TV. He co-founded a media company, Dateline Productions Inc., based in New York and Amsterdam, specializing in the production of documentaries, concerts, international co-productions, communication training and advice, and the development of formats. He has produced and directed close to twenty documentaries, and is the recipient of a Dutch Academy Award (for Enschede’s Sorrow). For Arts & Entertainment he produced Anne Frank, The Missing Chapter, a much acclaimed documentary about five missing pages from the famous diary. For PBS and American Public Television, he recently produced several concerts: Andiamo, Love from Italy, and Libera in Concert. He created quite a stir in Dutch Politics, when his interview with then-foreign minister Maxime Verhagen over a possible extended military presence in Afghanistan led to the fall of the cabinet. Shuttling back and forth between the United States and the Netherlands, he is Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent for BNR News radio, anchorman of his weekly talk show ‘BNR Bernard Hammelburg’, and a frequent guest commentator on radio and TV.
