Frank Theys

Frank Theys studied plastic art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Brussels and philosophy at the Free University of Brussels. In the 80s he realizes with his brother, Koen Theys, the 'Wagnercycle song of Belgium'. The pilot version ('Lied van mijn Land', 1984) won the Prix Arcanal on the Third Festival d'Art et de la Television in Montbeliard. 'The Rhine Gold' appears in 1986 and got purchased by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Ghent and the Center National de la Cinematographie de France.

'The Valkyrie' is premiered in 1989 in New York, where it opens the video section of The Museum of the Moving Image. In 1991, he received the Bleustein-Blanchetprijs for his video work. From 1992 until the end of 1995 he worked as house director at the Victoria Theatre. He writes and directs the following plays: 'Liesbeth, monologue for a young woman' (1992), which is nominated for the Signal Prize; 'Yes, wait!' (1993); 'From all those who have nothing to say, those who remain silent are the most pleasant' (1994) and '2012 (Now I am nationwide)' (1995). In 1994 he received the Victoria, the title of Cultural Ambassador of Flanders.

In 1996 Frank Theys stops with theatre to fully focus on film and video, including the documentary series 'TechnoCalyps', the interactive multimedia project 'Avatar', an interactive multimedia project, the film 'Cub' (2002) and several other video installations.
